Shénnóng is said to have tested hundreds of plants, identifying their properties and health benefits.

This knowledge was captured in a book called the Divine Farmer's Classic of Roots and Herbs. In this work, he precisely describes 365 different remedies derived from plants, animals and minerals, classifying them according to their toxicity.

A notable discovery attributed to Shénnóng is cannabis sativa, known in Chinese as Dà má, a plant with therapeutic properties used in traditional Chinese medicine.

«Despertando la sabiduría ancestral: Explorando la Fitoterapia China para una salud equilibrada»

One of the base emperors to understand the medicinal concepts of plants is the white emperor or known as Shén nóng 神農

We also talk that from this ancestral knowledge it is vitally important to identify the qi flow of each patient and what their reactions are like to external stimuli since some plants without a diagnosis from a teacher, instead of decongesting the qi flow, can even block them. .

The 5 elements are also taken into account in principle

It is important to define the exact mixtures and quantities for each patient and what will be the ideal recommendation of the teacher or doctor after an intervention with his patient.

For example, earthy-tasting plants may not be the best choice for a person with their earthy pulse.

If someone has an imbalance in the wood element, herbs can be used that strengthen and harmonize the liver and gallbladder.

Fundamental principles of phytotherapy in Oriental Medicine

Phytotherapy is based on a series of fundamental principles that are key to understanding how this ancient practice works and is applied. These principles provide a solid foundation for the selection and combination of medicinal herbs, as well as for the diagnosis of imbalances in the body.

Below, we will delve into some of the main principles:

Yin and Yang:

This theory is fundamental in traditional Chinese medicine. Yin and Yang are opposite but complementary forces that exist throughout the universe, including the human body.

Yin is associated with darkness, passivity, coolness and humidity, while Yang is related to light, activity, heat and dryness.

In herbal medicine and oriental medicine, the balance between Yin and Yang is essential for optimal health, and herbs are selected and combined to restore this balance when it is disturbed.

Five Element Theory:

According to this theory, everything in the universe, including the human body, is made up of five interconnected elements: wood, fire, earth, metal and water. Each element is related to specific organs, physiological functions and emotions.

Phytotherapy and traditional Chinese medicine uses this theory to understand how imbalances in elements can affect health and how medicinal herbs can restore balance.

Qi and Jing:

The concept of Qi and Jing is central to Chinese medicine. Qi can be described as the vital energy that flows throughout the body and is responsible for the functioning of organs and systems.

Jing refers to the vital essence, which is inherited from parents and stored in the kidneys.

Qi and Jing are considered essential for health.

Phytotherapy and TCM use herbs that can tone and regulate Qi and Jing, thus strengthening the body and promoting vitality.

These fundamental principles provide a conceptual basis for the selection and combination of medicinal herbs in phytotherapy. Understanding how Yin and Yang, the five elements, and Qi and Jing function is critical to prescribing herbal treatments that address specific imbalances in the body and promote holistic health.

It is important to highlight that these principles are applied in conjunction with the individual diagnosis of each being, where the constitution, symptoms and unique characteristics of each person are taken into account.

This allows for the creation of personalized herbal formulas that adapt to individual needs and promote optimal balance in the body.

Medicinal herbs:

Medicinal herbs play a central role in phytotherapy. These herbs have specific therapeutic properties and are used individually or in combinations to treat a wide range of imbalances and diseases. However, in oriental medicine, not only the properties of herbs are considered, but also their interaction with the patient and their individual need.

To form the correct recipes, the following is taken into account:

Classification of herbs: according to their characteristics and functions. Some common categories include herbs that tonify, disperse, purge, warm or cool, among others. Each category has a specific effect on the body and is selected based on the imbalances and symptoms present in each individual.

Individual herbs: Each has specific therapeutic properties and is used to treat different conditions. For example, ginseng is used to increase energy and strengthen the immune system, while licorice root is used to soothe coughs and promote digestion. Each herb is carefully selected based on its properties and its ability to address the imbalances present.

Herbal Combination: Herbs are rarely used in isolation. Instead, various herbs are combined to form complex herbal formulas. These combinations are based on the theory of Yin and Yang, the five elements, and the specific imbalances being treated. Combining herbs can enhance therapeutic effects, balance the properties of individual herbs, and minimize potential side effects. Herbal formulas can be prescribed in different forms, such as decoctions, powders, pills or liquid extracts.

Properties and flavors: They are described in terms of their properties and flavors. Properties can be hot, warm, cool, cold or neutral, and refer to the way they interact with the body. Flavors include sweet, bitter, spicy, sour and salty, and each has a specific effect on the body. These characteristics are taken into account when selecting and combining herbs to ensure proper balance in treatment.

Diagnosis in Chinese herbal medicine:

Diagnosis plays a crucial role in phytotherapy, as it helps identify specific imbalances and allows the selection of appropriate medicinal herbs to address those imbalances.

It is a comprehensive process that relies on careful observation, detailed questioning, and pulse assessment. These methods allow the Eastern Medicine practitioner to gain a deep understanding of imbalances and patterns in the body, mind, and spirit, and guide the selection of personalized herbal medicines for each patient.

Observation is used where the TCM doctor carefully observes patients for external signs that may indicate internal imbalances.

There is also a space where detailed questions are asked to gather information about symptoms, medical history, lifestyle and other factors that may affect the patient's health.

Gentle pressure is applied to the acupuncture points to assess the patient's sensitivity and response. Tenderness or pain at certain acupuncture points can provide clues to energy imbalances in the body.

The Pulse is considered a crucial diagnostic tool in traditional Chinese medicine. The doctor takes the pulse at different locations on the wrists and evaluates the quality, strength, speed, and rhythm of the pulse. Which provides information on the internal states of the organs.

Health conditions treated with phytotherapy and Traditional Chinese Medicine:

Phytotherapy is used to treat a wide range of health conditions and imbalances in the body, accompanying Oriental Medicine treatments. This holistic therapeutic practice addresses not only the symptoms, but also the underlying causes of imbalances from each person, as it is unique and requires an individual treatment approach.

Some of the most common pathologies are:

– Digestive problems.

– Sleep disorders.

– Respiratory conditions.

- Menstrual cycles.

– Stress and anxiety management.

– Chronic pain.

Taoism and Oriental Medicine (Traditional Chinese Medicine)

In Asia, the Tao (Dao) or path is seen from different perspectives, some from the religious, another from the esoteric and mysterious and others from the philosophical appreciation and applicable to everyday life or the understanding of natural behaviors.

All these series of variants or concepts have contributed both to science and medicine since if we look closely it teaches us a variant of physical and tangible and undeniable principles in the creation of ideas and projects.

In our own SHENG philosophy we receive all this information as a practical and useful way to cultivate well-being for the body, mind and spirit accompanied by Oriental Medicine.

How is the Tao born?

It dates back to ancient Chinese sages and philosophers, such as Laozi, considered the founder of Taoism, and Zhuangzi, one of its main exponents.

These thinkers explored the nature of the universe, harmony and balance, and established the foundations of Taoism as a philosophy of life.

These wise men discovered the existence of energy channels called meridians, along which Qi (Chi, Ki, Prana), the vital energy, circulates. These meridians are connected to the organs and systems of the body, and any imbalance in the flow of Qi can lead to illness and disease.

Taoism provided the conceptual framework for understanding and treating these energetic imbalances. Ancient Taoist doctors developed techniques and therapies, such as acupuncture, which are based on the insertion of needles into specific points on the meridians to regulate the flow of Qi (Chi, Ki, Prana) and restore harmony in the body.

Ancient traditional 氣 Qì

气Qì in Simplified Chinese

Taoist medicine also believes that the mind and body are interconnected, and that emotional and mental imbalances can affect physical health. Therefore, meditation and internal cultivation practices are used to calm the mind, balance emotions, and promote greater connection with the natural flow of life energy.

Today, Eastern medicine and its principles have spread widely throughout the world, and many practitioners and therapists continue to explore and apply this knowledge to promote holistic well-being.

What is the Tao and its relationship with Oriental Medicine?

Tao is an ancient philosophy and spiritual tradition originating in China that encompasses a holistic view of life and health. At the heart of Taoism is the concept of Tao, the fundamental principle that represents the primordial energy and universal force that flows through everything.

In the context of Eastern medicine, Taoism plays a vital role, as Taoist principles and teachings have greatly influenced the way traditional Chinese medicine is understood and practiced.

By exploring the intersection between Taoism and traditional Eastern medicine, we embark on a fascinating journey toward balance, harmony, and holistic well-being.

How to take advantage of Tao philosophy in the application of pathological disorders?

The concept of balance in traditional Chinese medicine is based on the observation of nature and its inherent ability to maintain harmonious order. By studying how nature resolves imbalance problems, such as pest control, Eastern medicine practitioners have applied that principle to understanding imbalances in the body and mind.

Rather than taking a direct combat approach against a disease or illness, this medicine seeks to understand the underlying causes and imbalances that generate it. Instead of temporarily suppressing symptoms, the aim is to identify the roots of the disease and facilitate its gradual and natural elimination.

This approach is based on the principle that the body has an innate ability to heal itself. Eastern medicine provides the conditions and tools necessary for the body to self-regulate and heal. It is believed that by creating a suitable and balanced environment, the self-healing process is facilitated, allowing the body to restore its state of harmony.

The theory of yin and yang and qi play a fundamental role in understanding this balance. Yin and yang are two opposite but complementary forces that exist in all things. In the body, they manifest as complementary aspects, such as calm and activity, cold and warm, internal and external. Qi, or vital energy, (prana, ki, chi) flows through the meridians, which are the energy channels that run through the body and organs.

In traditional Chinese medicine, imbalances in yin and yang, as well as the flow of qi, are considered to be the cause of many diseases and illnesses. Therefore, the therapeutic approach is aimed at balancing these forces and ensuring a harmonious flow of energy in the body. This is achieved through the use of techniques such as acupuncture, herbal medicine, proper nutrition, exercise and meditation practices.

In addition to Qi and meridians, Eastern medicine is based on the principles of the five elements and organ theory. The five elements (wood, fire, earth, metal and water) represent different aspects of nature and the human body. Each element is related to a specific organ and emotion. The balance between elements is essential for comprehensive health.

Organ theory in Eastern medicine differs to some extent from Western anatomy. Organs are not considered isolated entities, but are interconnected and have broader functions than just their physical structure.

From Traditional Chinese Medicine, each organ has emotional, energetic and functional associations that influence its state of health, as can be seen in the next table.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, the theory of the 5 elements, known as Wü xíng, plays a fundamental role.

This theory describes the relationship between the different elements of nature and how they are reflected in each of us, influencing the balance of our health.

The 5 elements are:

Fire

Water (水, shǔi),

Wood

Metal (金, jīn)

earth (土, tǔ).

Each element has particular characteristics and is associated with climate, season, color, emotion, flavor, time of day, organs, viscera and behavioral traits.

The imbalance of these elements determines the diagnosis of each patient, so it is essential to understand how they interact with each other.

The elements are related to each other and can influence the functioning of others through two main cycles: the generation cycle and the dominance cycle.

Generation cycle and dominance cycle

The generation cycle (also called creation cycle) 生 shēng. Describe how each element feeds and strengthens the next in the cycle.

The wood feeds the fire,

Fire produces earth with its ashes

The earth houses minerals,

Minerals (metal) feed water,

Water gives life to wood.

On the other hand, according to the cycle of domination (also called star of destruction) 克 kè. It shows how one element can control or weaken the next in the cycle.

The wood is nourished by the earth,

The earth retains water,

The water puts out the fire,

Fire melts metal,

Metal cuts wood.

These cycles are fundamental to understanding balance and imbalance in Traditional Chinese Medicine, and allow the doctor to identify and treat imbalances in each patient's body.

Another important aspect in Traditional Chinese Medicine is the concept of the Biological Clock. According to this concept, each organ has maximum functioning during certain hours of the day.

Biological Clock and its corresponding actions

«Meridianos en la Medicina Tradicional China: El flujo de energía vital para equilibrar tu salud y bienestar»

Traditional Chinese Medicine It is a holistic and ancient system that seeks to restore balance and harmony in the body through different techniques and fundamental principles.

In this article, we will delve into the concept of meridians, an essential part of Traditional Chinese Medicine, and their importance in the diagnosis and treatment of various conditions.

To better understand what meridians are, we share with you a metaphor that illustrates their function in the body.

Metaphor of the River and the Meridians

Imagine a crystalline river, large and mighty, that branches in different directions, creating an intricate network of tributaries. This river represents the 14 main meridians, also known as energy channels.

In this metaphor, the river water symbolizes the life energy called Qi.

Just like when it rains and the river rises, the flow of Qi in the meridians can also increase or decrease depending on various factors. These factors can be both external and internal and can affect the energy balance in the body.

Imagine now that, due to heavy rain, the sand along the river stirs and changes color, some rocks shift and small and large waterfalls form. This generates an increase in the force of the water and can lead to the river overflowing.

Additionally, the sand on the riverbank becomes wet, becoming slippery, which can cause damage to nearby trees due to excessive moisture. In some places, water stagnates, creating areas of stagnation.

In this metaphor, external factors, such as rain, represent environmental influences and external conditions that can affect the balance of the body. On the other hand, changes in water and rocks symbolize internal imbalances, such as blockages or alterations in the flow of Qi along the meridians.

As the rocks are removed, the water begins to flow normally again. Likewise, when the flow of Qi is restored in the meridians, the health of the individual begins to balance. However, it is important to highlight that maintaining health is not limited only to treatment, but also involves changes in habits and lifestyle that promote general well-being.

What are the energy meridians?

In the human body, there are 14 basic or standardized meridians that connect with each of the main organs. These meridians are:

Lung (yin)

Large intestine (yang)

Stomach (yang)

Liver (yin)

Heart (yin)

Small intestine (yang)

Bladder (yang)

Kidney (yin)

Pericardium (yin)

Triple heater (yang)

Gallbladder (yang)

Spleen-Pancreas (yin)

Du Mai (yang)

Ren Mai (yin)

Each of these meridians is directly related to a specific organ and is also associated with a particular emotion.

Specific resonator points

How many points does each meridian have?

Lung Meridian: About 11 points.

Large Intestine Meridian: About 20 points.

Stomach Meridian: About 45 points.

Spleen/Pancreas Meridian: About 21 points.

Small Intestine Meridian: About 19 points.

Small Intestine Meridian: About 19 points.

Bladder Meridian: About 67 points.

Kidney Meridian: About 27 points.

Pericardium Meridian: About 9 points.

Triple Warmer Meridian: About 23 points.

Gallbladder Meridian: About 44 points.

Liver Meridian: About 14 points.

Diagnosis and treatment in the Meridians of the body

Accurate diagnosis of imbalances in the meridians and points of the body that need to be treated is made through a comprehensive evaluation by the Oriental Medicine physician.

Based on symptoms, patient history, pulse, and other factors from observation of meridians and resonator points, the physician determines the best therapeutic approach to restore balance and promote health.

It is important to note that in Oriental Medicine an imbalance in a specific organ is not always addressed through that same organ, but other meridians and complementary points can be used to strengthen the flow of Qi and restore balance in the body. the mind and the spiritual aspect

Imbalance in these meridians can manifest as physical and emotional pathologies. However, through different therapeutic techniques, harmony in the flow of energy can be addressed and restored.

Some of these techniques are:

Acupuncture: Thin needles are inserted into specific points on the body along the meridians to unblock and regulate the flow of energy.

Moxibustion: Heat generated by burning the Artemisia vulgaris (moxa) plant near the skin is used to stimulate energy flow.

Phytotherapy: Medicinal herbs are used to treat energy imbalances and strengthen the organs corresponding to the affected meridians.

Tuina: Pressure techniques are applied to points and meridians to promote proper flow of energy and relieve blockages.

Qi Gong and Tai Chi: These practices combine gentle movements, breathing and concentration to balance energy and strengthen the body.

Oriental Medicine considers other factors in energy imbalances, such as diet, rest, stress management and maintaining an emotional state, relationships, and lifestyle.

It is important to keep in mind that Eastern Medicine is based on a holistic approach, considering the whole person and seeking balance between body, mind and spirit.

Energy imbalances in the meridians are treated individually according to the needs and characteristics of each person, with the aim of restoring harmony and promoting overall health.

«Equilibrio y Armonía: Descubre el Poder del Yīn Yáng en la Medicina Tradicional China»

The Yīn Yáng 阴 阳 is a fundamental concept that represents harmony and balance in all aspects of the universe.

In Chinese medicineit is understood that yīn and yáng are two complementary and interdependent forces. Although they may appear to be opposites, they are actually in constant balance and need each other to exist. Therefore, it is understood that in the yīn there is yáng and in the yáng there is yīn.

It is important to note that when one of these aspects is in excess, the other decreases.

The Yīn Yáng theory also maintains that everything in the universe is in constant transformation, nothing remains static.

What is Yīn 阴 energy?.

Yīn refers to intuitive and wise energy, it represents the internal guidance of each individual and their deepest aspect.

This energy is characterized by concepts such as empathy, the ability to work as a team, the ability to multitask, the willingness to be inclusive, as well as being hesitant and perfectionist. In cerebral terms, it is related to the left hemisphere.

Yīn energy is communicated through dreams, emotions and changes. It is associated with the capacity to love, sensitivity, emotionality, affection, tenderness, generosity, understanding, collaboration and forgiveness.

What is Yáng 阳 energy?

Yang energy is what drives action and the ability to get things done.

It represents construction, movement, the ability to speak and move.

Yang is strength, courage and determination. It is related to the right cerebral hemisphere.

This energy is associated with rationality, strength, decision making, the ability to set limits, sexuality, perseverance, a sense of reality, practicality, personal power and quick decision making.

Relationship of the organs with the Yīn Yáng

Traditional Chinese medicine considers Yīn Yáng duality to apply to various aspects of life and nature, including the human body.

The Yīn organs and the Yáng organs are considered part of a system of balance and complementarity.

Below, you can see how the Yin and Yang organs are related according to Chinese medicine:

Yīn Organs:

Heart: Controla la circulación sanguínea y alberga el «Shen» (espíritu).

Lungs: They govern respiration and the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide.

Kidneys: They regulate fluid balance and control reproduction, growth and development.

Liver: Stores and distributes blood, regulates the flow of Qi (energy), and controls emotions.

Spleen: Controls the transformation and transportation of food and the production of Qi and blood.

Yang Organs:

Small Intestine: It is responsible for the absorption and transport of nutrients.

Large Intestine: Eliminates solid waste and helps in water reabsorption.

Stomach: Receives and breaks down food for subsequent digestion.

Bladder: Stores and eliminates urine.

Gallbladder: Stores and secretes bile to aid in the digestion of fats.

Triple heater: Helps in the circulation of body fluids and regulates metabolism.

It is important to note that these Yin and Yang organs do not exclusively refer to anatomical organs, but rather represent functional and energetic aspects in traditional Chinese medicine.

The balance between Yīn and Yáng is essential for health and well-being.

The imbalance between these two forces can lead to diseases and disorders. The goal is to harmonize and balance these opposing forces through various practices, such as acupuncture, herbal medicine, proper nutrition, meditation and physical activity, to promote health and prevent disease.

It is important to note that Yīn Yang is not limited only to the physical aspect, but also applies to emotions, thoughts, seasons of the year and natural cycles.

Why is it important to know the concept of Yīn Yáng

By knowing these concepts you can also understand the behaviors associated with Yīn Yáng, since this opens the diagnostic perspective to know yourself and choose what is consistent with your own well-being. At the same time, it gives diagnostic points to oriental doctors for effective treatment, whether preventive or pathological.

Behaviors Yīn 阴

Yīn behaviors tend to be more passive, introspective and introverted.

They are characterized by slowness, intolerance to cold, sensitivity, relaxation, imagination, contemplative thinking and sadness.

Comportamientos Yáng 阳

On the other hand, yang behaviors are more active, energetic, and focused on production.

They are marked by movement, speed, joy and extroversion.

Food and Yīn Yáng

yang foods

These foods are associated with the fire element, they tend to generate heat and invigorate.

Some examples of yang foods are: cinnamon, eggs, beef, caffeine, chicken, garlic, onion, peanuts, salmon, sweet potato, wheat, and pumpkin.

Yīn foods

Yīn foods are associated with the water element, which are more refreshing. These foods are especially suitable for hot climates and people who experience excessive heat and sweating.

Some examples of yīn foods are: apples, pears, bananas, beans, broccoli, cauliflower, grapes, honey, lettuce, mushrooms, spinach, yogurt, watermelon, and celery.

Why is Yīn Yáng related to Eastern Medicine?

It was within the framework of Taoism that the concept of Yīn Yáng was developed.

The Taoists, observing nature, recognized that the universe is composed of two opposite but complementary forces.

This concept was applied in various fields, including Traditional Chinese Medicine.

Chinese doctors observed that the human body also exhibited Yin and Yang characteristics.

As we mentioned previously, each organ and bodily function was associated with a specific Yīn or Yáng nature. Maintaining balance between these two opposing forces was essential for health and well-being.

In Oriental Medicine, a more complete theory of Yīn Yáng was developed. Imbalances between Yīn and Yáng were understood to be related to pathologies and disorders.

In Taoism influenced Chinese medicine by emphasizing the importance of harmony and balance. In turn, Chinese medicine provided Taoism with a practical framework to apply its philosophical principles in the field of health.

This mutual interaction has strengthened the relationship between Yīn Yáng and Chinese medicine over time.

This is how Taoism provided the philosophical context for the development of the Yīn Yáng concept, while Chinese medicine adopted it and applied it in the understanding and treatment of beings from a comprehensive perspective.

This relationship has been fundamental in the practice of Oriental Medicine and has influenced Chinese culture for centuries.
